The Atlantis Ring:

Eight Years on and still our number one engagement ring

The Atlantis collection started with a single ring, it gained so much attention for being something different, traditional with a modern twist. The colour gemstone is the centre stage and is set off beautifully by white diamonds. Treasures from a lost world under the sea was the inspiration, ocean coloured gemstones and we can even source diamonds from the sea too if you ask for this specifically - we have a supplier…

That was eight years ago. The collection has grown a lot since then, but the Atlantis ring, the one that started it all remains the piece I'm asked about most. And more and more, it's becoming the engagement ring we create time and time again, each time a little bit different and each one unique to our clients.

Here's a bit of the story behind it.

The hidden detail most people miss

Look at the Atlantis ring from the side. The bands flare gently outwards at the base, it's subtle, but intentional. That silhouette is a mermaid's tail. It's why so many of my clients have always called it the Mermaid Ring. I love that it's a detail you have to look for. A little secret the wearer carries with them.

That's what I want from jewellery. Not something that announces itself, something that rewards the people who pay attention.

Why I keep coming back to sapphires

Colour is everything to me. It always has been. And a really exceptional sapphire or tourmaline one with true depth and life in its hue is one of the most beautiful things I know.

What I love most about working with coloured gemstones is that no two are alike.

Cornflower blue is completely different from deep teal with green running through it or a rich velvety Royal blue. I genuinely find the variations endlessly fascinating, and I think a coloured sapphire engagement ring gives a couple something no one else has. Their stone. Their colour. Nothing quite like it anywhere else.

They're also wonderfully practical, a 9 on the Mohs hardness scale, second only to diamond. Built for everyday wear, for real life.

The sourcing (the part I take very seriously)

I'm a trained gemmologist, and I personally choose every stone. I've spent years building relationships with the best suppliers and cutters around the world, and I know where to go for specific colours, specific cuts, specific qualities.

The cut of a coloured stone matters more than people realise. It needs to sit close to the finger, nothing too high or top-heavy, a balanced stone or one that has a good spread is what we say in the trade. Take note of the facets, these need to be angled so light moves through the stone beautifully in real life, not just under studio lights. When a stone I've found needs refining, I'll work directly with a cutter to get it right. And for clients who want something completely custom, a specific shape, an extra facet or two, that's absolutely something we can do together.

I've never taken shortcuts with this. I never will.

My love of antique diamonds

For the diamond elements in Atlantis pieces, the side stones are a mix of either round diamonds, ovals or trapezoids.

I reach for antique diamonds whenever I can. Old mine-cuts, old European cuts. Hand-cut diamonds from another era entirely.

Their facets are slightly larger and arranged differently from modern brilliant cuts, which means light doesn't bounce back at you in one bright flash, it moves around inside the stone. It shifts and dances as you turn your hand. There's a warmth and character to them that I find completely missing from modern diamonds. Each one is slightly different. Each one has a history.

They are, in my opinion, simply more interesting. And for a ring that's meant to last a lifetime, interesting matters.

Why the Atlantis ring works so beautifully as an engagement ring

It doesn't look like anyone else's ring. For couples who want something meaningful and distinctive, something that actually reflects who they are, that's not a small thing.

It has a story worth telling. The mythology behind the collection, the mermaid's tail in the band, the hand-selected sapphire, the antique diamonds chosen for their character. A ring should say something about the person wearing it.

And it's made entirely for you. The sapphire I source for your ring won't be like anyone else's. We'll talk about colour, about what draws you in, about how you want it to feel. The Atlantis ring is the beginning of a conversation, not the end of one.

If this sounds like the kind of ring you would love, it would be a pleasure to hear from you.

Consider customisation

For a truly unique and personalised touch, consider commissioning a ring that reflects your love story. We can design it from scratch to create the jewellery of your dreams or customise one of our signature designs with a special stone of your choice.
