Nina is a Cornwall-based artist whose work I have long-admired - if you have visited me in the Minka studio, you’ll know I have a very special piece of hers hung on the wall. Like Minka jewellery, her pieces take inspiration from her travels and the beautiful scenery she sees along the way - I feel particularly drawn to the captivating colours of her seascapes. I am thrilled to have travelled to Cornwall to meet Nina, to capture her in her studio wearing her favourite Minka pieces, whilst chatting all-things art, travel and of course jewels. I hope you love this read…
Minka & Friends
Meet Nina Brooke
Q. Where did you grow up? Have you always felt drawn to the ocean and travel?
I grew up in Rock, Cornwall. One of the very few local kids, I still have my studio there today. As a family we moved from Treligga to the popular seaside town when I was two. We sailed a lot as a family and we were always travelling the oceans on old wooden boats. So ocean and travel were a big part of my childhood.
Q. We’re very lucky to often shoot our jewellery in Cornwall - can you name a few of your favourite local spots?
Yes Polzeath and Trebarwith are my favourite local spots near the house.
Q. When and how did you discover your love for painting?
When I was about 15 - over half a lifetime ago, my mother was a big inspiration and influenced my creative side. I did painting courses outside of school, and painted commissions at 16 for pocket money.
Q. What is your creative process? When did you start experimenting with the bird's eye view?
I started the birds eye view 8 years ago, I was always interested in expressing myself in a different way to others. When painting you have to create your own language that’s unique to you. When I found this perspective, I was off creating works that no one had done before. It felt so liberating, especially as there are so many great artist in Cornwall, let alone the world.
Q. What is your biggest work achievement to date?
Biggest work achievement to date would be the 4 meter long commission that’s hanging in a private clients house in Cornwall. But I’d also say doing a show in the Maldives with the Intercontinental Hotel was a beautiful experience.
Q. What do you love most about what you do?
The travel aspect is a big draw, as well as the surfing. Inspired by the beauty of the natural planet I enjoy trying to depict it from above and seeing how we live in this big theatre set called earth. Everywhere you look there is a new scene when you travel. We are all acting, playing a part it.
Q. What feelings do you hope to evoke through your art?
The feeling of wonder, gratitude and relief, knowing that you are just one tiny ant in this big world get the viewer outside their head and into the bigger picture.
Q. Your pieces completely transport me to sunnier skies by the sea. Where has been your favourite place to travel to?
The Maldives, Costa Rica and Hawaii!
Q. Where are you hoping to travel to next?
Japan is next to discover the snow series!
Q. Your top travel tips?
Leaving packing aside - always check your flight dates and times, I have missed many not doing so! Drink plenty of vitamin C before and during the flight, alway board the plane last!
Q. As a fellow lover of all things colour - which is your favourite gemstone?
A light brown champagne diamond.
Q. What’s your jewellery style? What are some of the most sentimental pieces in your jewellery box?
My style is minimal with a bit of funk, I like wearing what no one else has, so unique, one-off pieces.
Q. Your favourite Minka piece?
I’m a big fan of the three diamond ring I tried on at the beach with you.
Q. Where can people find your art and what’s next for you?
My Jersey show is currently underway as we speak, so I’m here writing from the island. But all the artworks are online www.ninabrooke.co.uk or to view on my Instagram @ninabrookeart.
